The Late, Late Show

Our recent clear weather coincided with “moderate” level auroral displays. I understand that the best displays happened in the middle of the night, which is very common; 2:00 a.m. seems to be the optimal time. We never got out that late, but on October 6th we had a great display around 9:30 p.m., and I got out with my camera to take a few shots.

I hope to do better in the future. Tonight I’m attending a meeting of the Haines Photography Group at the library, that will feature tips on photographing the aurora from one of our town’s best photographers. Maybe I can apply what I learn the next time we see a display.

We had a great show on the night of the seventh around that time: surprisingly early! It was great to spend some time out there, soaking it all in, without having to get up out of a warm bed or miss valuable sleep.
