Tier II Subsistence Moose Hunt Day 1

This is it! Today’s the first day of the Tier II Subsistence Moose Hunt. That means that instead of sitting here in my PJs, typing a quick note to the blog, I should be out in the field, looking for a legal bull.

Soon enough. First I need to clean my rifle, clean my bod, pack the gear I’ll need, and a whole lot more. Today will be another scouting day, continuing a process I started shortly after learning I’d drawn a permit for the hunt back in mid-August.

I’m hopeful, yet fearful. Moose are huge creatures, and hunting and killing one, as hard as that is, seems simple compared to field dressing it properly! The whole family sat and watched an Alaska Fish & Game video on the process. No one barfed, but no one came away gung ho about trying what we’d learned, either.

They say that the fun ends and the work begins when you kill your bull. The obverse of that is, if you never kill a bull, the fun never stops!

We’ll see . . . .
