Stormy Start to the Year

We’re in the middle of a 4-5 day stretch of harsh weather. We’ve had storm force winds for a couple of days, and will see them through the weekend. The winds, from the north, are “outflow” winds, bringing cold Canadian air into Lynn Canal.

The forecast says we’ve been getting 55 knot winds (63+m. p. h.) with gusts of 70 and even 80 knots (80-92+ m.p.h.) although I don’t know that we’re getting those gusts right here.

I’m doing my best to stay inside. Michelle and Aly have braved the weather to get to and from work, but I’m happy sitting near the fire with an extra cup of coffee. Call me a wimp, I don’t care.

I am keeping up with the chores, particularly filling the wood box.

I stepped out this morning to take a few photos. I didn’t stay long. If the wind’s steady at 50 knots, it’s turning our 17°F into a wind chill of -8°. It’s hard on the shutter finger . . . .

We're at about half tide, looking down on the swells, so the seas won't impress as photos like they do in their presence (Photo: Mark A. Zeiger).

Until this dies down, I don’t imagine the blog topics will be earth shaking.

Epiphany Week

It is the last week of our Christmas season, which generally ends on Epiphany or Twelfth Night, January 6th (see Twelfth Night Brings Christmas to a Close). This year, our order of events has changed, much for the better.

While Aly attended college and continued living down south afterward, the Christmas seasons she could come home were truncated considerably by her departure to return south in time to start a new term or get back to her job. In the past, a day came shortly after New Year’s Day, but always before Twelfth Night, when we had to pack her gear out and run her to the ferry.
