Family Time!

It started yesterday when Aly staggered over to the cabin, sick.

We don’t know what happened, although since it’s been sunny and unusually hot here, we strongly suspect heat exhaustion. Whatever the case, Aly had a tour scheduled, and we needed to help her call in sick.

Michelle hiked over to the bay to talk to the boss, who had spent the night at his family’s Mud Bay home. To get to his house, she had to skirt a brown bear that has haunted the bay all summer. Once they’d talked, Michelle waited for him to leave, so they could go together, in case the bear had stuck around.

“Is that your brother-in-law’s boat?” he asked, pointing toward the mouth of the bay.

Sure enough, Wayward sat at anchor, apparently since the evening before.

We’ve been excitedly anticipating their arrival for a while. They departed from their last harbor with fair winds, but the southerlies switched to light northerlies, so we figured they’d take a little longer to arrive than they did. They did all right, until trying to enter Mud Bay, when a sudden squall forced them south. They ended up spending the night just short of the bay, before clawing in the next day.

They’ll be here a couple of weeks, during which we’ll try to make up for the almost three years between now and the last time we were all together (see Baranof Warm Springs Visit). It’ll fly by too fast!

By the way, we are now fairly certain Aly did suffer from heat exhaustion. She’s feeling much better now.

Boat Geeks: Both boats shown are part of Dave’s Triloboats line: Wayward is a T32x8 LUNA, the tender is a 16X4 NOT-A-GULL.
