A Bloody Business

Yesterday, as we hiked a visitor out to catch her ferry home, I took a sudden fall, possibly the worst I’ve experienced here.

Falls are a constant danger on and around our homestead. We think about it a lot, and try to prevent incidents (see, for example, Missteps and Well Balanced). Even so, it happens.

I tripped on a tree root, as simple as that. But, when I hit the ground, I ripped up my knee. I swore a bit, picked myself up, and continued the hike, but investigated when my pants began to feel sticky. When I pulled up my pant leg, we found blood everywhere. By the time we got to town, blood had begun to soak through the double knee.

We went on to town, stopped at a grocery store for a roll of paper towels and supplies to augment our car First Aid kit, and went on to the ferry terminal. There we cleaned up and bandaged the knee.

I had about 4 abrasions, and one or two shallow punctures that still make me shake my head in confusion, since the surface I fell on didn’t offer any sharp points that I saw. The copious bleeding surprised us all.

When we got home, I pulled the pants off and treated the bloody spots. I turned them inside out and took the included photo, just for the record.

If the standard cold water wash doesn’t take out the stains, try some meat tenderizer or similar to treat the spots. Found this out dealing with post-operation incision drainage.

    Hi Mark,

Hope you are doing better – it is so much easier to bounce back from falls when you are six. FYI, I tried to buy some soap through Internet Explorer’s link to PayPal and it wouldn’t load. I was able to get a connection through Mozilla Firefox. I have no idea if that is a problem you can fix or not, but I thought I’d like you know. Happy Holidays and feel better!!!

Hi Dick, great tip, thanks! Whatever Michelle gave me for it did the trick (Spray and Wash?). As you can imagine, with me as a husband and this homestead as a home, she’s an expert at removing stains!

Hi Susan, thanks, I’ve bounced back. Most of the pain came from the sport tape holding the gauze on my hairy knee! It’s healing up nicely. I seem to have avoided any bruising or bashing, from which it would take me a lot longer to recover.

Thanks for letting me know about Explorer! I’m a Mac user, so I have no good way to test the Website on Explorer. I have a few limited tricks I can try to widen the appeal.

Michelle will put your order in the mail today, by the way. Thanks again! And, thanks for pursuing the purchase through the Website difficulties!
