Technical Notes on the Boomkin Stop:

Steve Anderson described via email a method of securing the boomkin to the boat that Bennett Scheur had shared with him. As I read the email, my initial impression of what was being described was very inaccurate—but that impression seemed like a good idea! The result is the "gizmo" pictured below: a housing of stacked and glued 2X4, with a hole drilled in the back. I glued a washer to the outside rear of the housing, and a shortened eye bolt is inserted through the hole. I embedded a matching nut in the base of the boomkin, with a hole to take the shaft of the eye bolt. The gizmo is glued to the cockpit bench.

When the boomkin is fitted into the housing, a few turns on the eye bolt tighten the base of the boomkin into the housing, securing it. This keeps it from rattling around while in use. The cut-out side makes it easier to seat the boomkin and remove it when necessary without going outside the boat.
