Random “Homestead” Notes

Although I try to write a complete essay for each blog post, every once in a while, events pile up that I’d like to mention, but don’t necessarily need or want to compose an entire post to cover.

Most momentous for us, Aly just got her wisdom teeth extracted Friday. No parent wants a child to go through surgery. Far less when there’s no way to be there with her. Luckily, Aly has a loyal boyfriend, who has promised to spoil her rotten while she recovers. We spoke to her Saturday, and she sounds perfectly normal. She’s bouncing b back very quickly.

Our clear weather disappeared in a snowstorm Friday night, just in time to cancel Ruth Moody’s concert in Haines. She’s one of the original Wailin’ Jennys, a favorite group of ours. We’d been really looking forward to hearing her. But, since we got over 13 inches by mid afternoon yesterday, I suppose we were better off not having a reason to go to town last night.

Thursday, KSTK radio interviewed me about the release of the audiobook edition of Sacred Coffee: A “Homesteader’s” Paradigm. I’m pretty pleased, because I started my radio career (in a former life) at KSTK as a Wrangell High School student. I prattled on just like a hermit who seldom gets a chance to talk to anyone. Hopefully, their news reporter will edit into a coherent feature!

This is the first (and so far only) response to my recent press release (see Press Release: First the Press, Then the Release). Hopefully more will follow! I don’t know when it’ll air, unfortunately.

I hope you remembered to set your clocks ahead, if your state participates in the idiocy of Daylight Saving Time, like Alaska does. I’ve written against this practice a couple of times (see It’s Happening Again: Daylight Saving Time Returns to Screw Things Up and Stop Messing Around With Time!).
