Winter Sleep

If you’re reading Mary Oliver’s Twelve Moons as a lunar calendar with me this year, it’s time another poem, this one for the first quarter moon: Winter Sleep.

Like the last selection, I messed with the sequence a bit to make it more appropriate to the season. In the natural calendar, winter started yesterday, on November 1st. Switching the poems slightly allowed me to let this one open the season for us.

How could I not like Winter Sleep, a poem about snuggling? hibernation is a tempting option for me right now. Home alone on the homestead, facing the first fierce storms of winter, it would be all to easy to pack myself off to bed and ride it all out.

But, no. I’ve got things to do. And, the weather man says snow is just around the corner. Time to get busy!
