Reemay: Gotta Have It!

A couple of years ago, Michelle noticed movement out by the garden. I went out to investigate, and found that a local red squirrel had decided the reemay Michelle had spread to dry was exactly what he needed. I went out and shot some video, then edited it down and added a title and some music from Apple Garage Band. I’ve never had much luck posting it on line, so I finally put it up on You Tube.

It’s not America’s Funniest Home Videos quality, perhaps, but we so rarely manage to film the animal antics we see around the homestead. There’s a lot going on, but most of the time we’re too busy watching to try to frame a decent shot. In this instance, I had all the time in the world. The squirrel never even seemed to notice me, he was so intent on finding a way to drag that sheet off. I think I shot about 30 minutes of digital film in all.

I imagine he wanted it as nesting material. I noticed a squirrel nest that had fallen out of its tree near the next cabin over. I estimate it was about 40% man-made materials, either toilet paper or insulation, I couldn’t tell for sure.

Most of the time, stunts like this are fine. It’s when they go after our food that we have to interfere with the squirrels’ normal operations.
